Canary Fancy, After the Music of Gaspar Sanz, arr. J. Goldberg
Guitar Quartet
​This arrangement of the famous Canarios by Gaspar Sanz has a part suitable for every level of player. The hemiola or constant alternation between duple and triple meters is the main challenge of the work and an enticing characteristic of the piece.
Guitar 1 is the most difficult part and employs 1st through 7th positions. Guitar 2 is a more difficult part and employs the 1st and 2nd positions. Guitar 3 is the rhythm guitar part. Use a rasgueado strumming technique. Guitar 4 can be played by a traditional guitar or a contra/bass guitar if one is available. The part can be played in 1st position, or using 2nd position as fingered. Another effect found in the piece is the use of pizzicato (palm muting) in several parts. The tempo of the work should match the capability of the ensemble.

El Conjunto excede la suma de sus partes, by Julie Goldberg, Guitar Quintet
The Whole is Greater than the Sum of the Parts, explores the interdependence of musicians in an ensemble setting. A bit of a play on words, conjunto also refers to a Latin American musical group or band. Individual notes of scales and arpeggios are dispersed among the guitar parts. A melody begins in one voice and is completed in a different voice. Elements of rhythmic grooves are spread throughout the ensemble. All parts of the ensemble must work together to realize this piece. No one voice can stand alone.

El Noi de la Mare, arr. J. Goldberg
Guitar Quartet
The Catalonian Folk Song, El Noi de la Mare, (The Mother’s Son) from Northeastern Spain is a traditional Christmas Carol. The great guitarist, Andrés Segovia would often perform Miguel Llobet’s arrangement as an encore, making El Noi de la Mare a favorite piece among guitarists.

Misionera by F. Bustamente, arr. J. Goldberg
Guitar Quintet
Misionera is the most famous composition of Argentinian composer and pianist, Fernando Bustamente. The title refers to a region of Latin America that extends between Paraguay and Brazil. Originally composed for keyboard, this lively work has been arranged for and performed by a wide variety of solo and ensemble instrumentalists. In this arrangement, Julie Goldberg exchanges melodic material back and forth between voices,playing with an echo effect and highlighting the interplay between musicians in the guitar orchestra. This arragement is for guitar quartet with an optional contra or part.

Pachel-Rumba after Pachelbel's Canon in D, by J. Goldberg
Guitar Quintet
Pachel-Rumba is a latin take on the famous Canon in D by Johann Pachelbel. The piece features the Latin rumba rhythm (4/4) however, is grouped into the following 8th note pattern: 3+3+2. Young guitarists will find this a natural rhythmic pattern to feel. Easy to intermediate difficulty.

Romanza Rumba, arr. J. Goldberg
Guitar Quartet
Romanza Rumba, arr. by Julie Goldberg for Guitar Quartet or Guitar Quartet with Contra Guitar. This piece is based on the famous Spanish Romance by Anonymous. Although classical guitarist play the piece in a straight triple meter, this arrangement features the syncopated Rumba Rhythm used by flamenco and Latin-American guitarists.

Simple Sampling of Gifts, Based on the Shaker Melody, Simple Gifts by Elder Joseph Brackett, arr. J. Goldberg, Guitar Quintet
Simple Sample of Gifts is a great piece for a large guitar orchestra or guitar quintet. Set in a theme and variation form, this piece explores extended techniques such as harmonics, rasgeuado, and golpe. Perfect for the multi-level group, Guitar I is the most difficult and employs notes in the higher positions and more challenging techniques, Guitar II carries the main melody and plays notes almost exclusively in first position. Guitar III employs the first three strings of the guitar and open chords. Guitar IV is a rhythm guitar part with chords symbols and extended percussion techniques. Guitar V can be played on a traditional guitar or on a contra (bass) guitar.

Zum Gali Fancy on a Traditional Israeli Folk Melody, by J. Goldberg
Guitar Quartet
Zum Gali Gali is a traditional Hebrew song relating to the formation of the State of Israel, in 1948. This
fancy uses percussion techniques, strummed chords, as well as independent melodic lines to challenge and engage the beginning guitar student.
